What's the flavour difference between traditional and cultivated rums?

Cultivated Rums - A Different Character

People often ask us about the flavour difference between traditional molasses rums and cultivated rums.

Rum is an incredible varied and dynamic spirits category, with lots of variation and variety of flavour.

The rules around the production of traditional molasses rums vary from country to country.

Generally speaking, the taste we are most familiar with in Australia is characterized by heavy and sweet notes of sticky toffee and vanilla for dark aged rums, while white rums usually have a very light flavour profile.

By comparison, cultivated rums are vibrant, complex and fruity.

They tend to have an earthy or grassy character and are typically dry rather than sweet.

Unaged (white) cultivated rums, or cane spirits, are full of flavour and can be enjoyed in cocktails, mixed simply with ginger beer & lime, or sipped straight up in a Ti Punch.

Aged cultivated rums should be sipped and savoured like a fine malt whisky or cognac.
