What is single estate rum?

The term Single Estate is becoming used more widely in the trade and whether it be in discussion of malt whisky, agave or rum, the term is generally regarded as synonymous with Farm to Bottle, meaning that the raw material is grown on the estate where it is fermented, distilled, aged and bottled.

Premiumisation of the rum category will require significant investment and innovation and will be driven by smaller volume, better quality and higher value liquid. Invariably, this will lead towards single estate brands. The development of an Australian Cultivated Rum (ACR) mark similar to the AOC Martinique, Burgundy or Cognac geographic indicators can play an important part in driving premiumisation, authenticity and provenance in the rum category.

ACR rum is inherently small-scale, seasonal and fundamentally farm to bottle in its character and production and the complex flavour profile offered by ACR rums, which can premiumise any classic rum cocktail, are unique to this style of production.
